View Full Version : Marsh LAN 2
Me and hawk are organising a LAN in crick a small village near Daventry. The venue is at "Crick Olde School" opposite the Church. (I'll put Maps up soon). Its on 22nd March 9.00am - 6.00pm. We will be playing the usual games and maybe some quake 3. It'll cost you a small fee of
Do you have a website with details?
Do you have any guys signed up already? What network/servers will you have?
The price is certainly right :)
Sorry we dont have a website at the moment, its a working progress. Is only 10mbs but we're planing on upgrading in the near future. No people signed up yet as we only put it up this night! (1/02/03)
Dont be put off, we are going to order a 100mb hub for the event, and we will have a website runing asap.

Get a switch, not a hub
Let us know as soon as you have a url for a website :)
Will do Mcbain. We are getting/trying to get a hub as we have came across a very cheap one! but i'll have a look for a switch anyway!

Hubs are basically a broadcast device, anything that comes in one port gets sent out all of the other ones, so the effective bandwidth of a 100MBit hub is a 100MBit across all the ports (so divide it by the number of ports to get effective bandwidth for each PC). Switches have intelligent routing, when something comes in one port it decides which port to send it out on depending on MAC/IP addresses, so on a 100MBit switch you get the full 100MBit for each port.
Get a switch, they are so worth the extra cash!!

Just need a couple more quid and i'll be able to get this http://www.scan.co.uk/products/ (then go to networking then to the 16port 10/100mbps switch desktop, product code LN726) So this is basically mine now.
a wise choice sir, you'll be glad you did...
We recently bought one of these:

(though we paid a bit less than that IIRC)
And it rocks :~)
Is anyone interested in coming cause I need to no numbers
I wont be able to make it, so I doubt Wintermute will be able to attend (as he has no way of getting there).
What you must remember as you embark on your LAN Event organising career is, there is only a certain amount of events that some people can attend. Some have trouble getting transport, some dont have the cash to attend as many as they would like and others, like me, just dont have the time to attend all that many. Because of this it is unlikely I will be able to attend many other events than our own and the UKLans ones. :?
Do keep us all informed though, there may be a weekend you have an event and I have nothing to do (this is why I came to my first UKLans event). Also, if you need any help or advice, just post and one of any of us will give you whatever help we can

Well, I could steal your car  , but as it is I'm running quite short of free weekends in February and March. And I really should start going to this CCNA course on Saturdays, get value for money for my 400 squid...

wheres the UK Lans next event?
Does anyone else want to come? because we need more names if we are to go ahead with the event
u said ur going to have to go ahead because of the hall booking?
Unfortunatly (as perhaps your finding) its not as simple as booking a hall and making a few post to run a LAN :? We market ours and we still struggle with low numbers and people not showing up :(
The main problem is there just aren't enough weekends in the month for some people. If I won the lottery (which isn't likely cause I don't play it :P ) I would probably be attending, until then I gotta work 40+ hours a week....so there aint enough time for all the LANs I'd like to go to :(
