Podcasts, for those that don't know, are kinda like recorded radio shows that you can download as an MP3 and stick on you iPod, PDA or any other MP3 player to listen to at your leisure.

For me they are ideal things to listen to as I head into work on the bus. I don't like to listen to music so early in the morning, watching something luike Scrubbs on the bus would just make me feel ill, but a nice humorous show about things I'm interested in seem to be a good idea.

I've now download iPodder (http://ipodder.sourceforge.net/index.php) which will remember the podcasts I want and infact download them for me as they update. I can then either play them on my PC as I'm browsing or posting on the forum, or transfer them onto my PDA for the trip to work

Then I've browsed through Podcast.net (http://www.podcast.net/) for podcasts of things I would be interested in. PC Gaming, tech news, NFL updates etc. Most of these have an RSS feed or XML link, that can be added to the subscriptions on iPodder for it to keep up-to-date for you.

Anyone else interested in this? Anyone know of intresting or amusing Podcasts I should check out?

There are some NFL podcasts here (http://mysportsradio.com/) including a general review and one for the Skins (http://mysportsradio.com/?cat=34)

Listened to a couple today. LOVED bang, very good NFL stuff. Then I started listening to one 'GameTalkLive' and couldn't bear it. Very patronising. I was listening to episode 5, so its not like it was the first one and the guy was explaining what an expansion pack was... :wall:

Also, he said he wanted to throw a spotlight on 'WWE Day of Reckoning' (he also explained this is a wrestling game :side: :wall: ) but then talked about what 'he had heard' about the game

:wall:

That ones removed from my subscriptions.

Who's in favour of a Lanarchy Podcast, recorded in our TeamSpeak channel each week?

a general review and one for the Skins (http://mysportsradio.com/?cat=34)

I've listened to this a couple of times now, and not all that impressed :( Yes, its all about the Skins, but for me it is tooo biased, and doesn't really give all that much info. The last one just kept telling the Cowboys fans they'd been beaten, yes I know that, and gave a few stats from players, I can find them easy enough... Shame really :(

I'm finding it frustrating that many of the podcasts come down almost a week after they were made...

I don't know if its my iPodder, but NFL Rants & Raves for example, near the end of this week I finally get last weeks pre-view  Thats just no good at all :?

Looks like video versions of Podcasts will become more popular (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051013/wr_nm/podcasting_video_dc).

**EDIT** Also, this podcast by The Widget (http://www.thewidgetshow.com/) has become one of my favourites. 3 guys, chatting about games and gadgets and generally abusing each other... makes me think a Lanarchy Podcast would be a success ;)

**EDIT2** Not worth a new post, but here is Podcast Alley (http://www.podcastalley.com/) which has lots more podcast options.

I realise I am apparently the only one interested in Podcasts :side: and I'm talking to myself in this thread  But I thought I'd post a bit of an update, as I had a look round for some new podcasts tonight. First off, literally just as I'd finished looking around I heard the TV behind saying 'Ricky Gervais' new show that you can listen to when you want'. 'What, like a podcast?' I thought... A quick google gave this result (http://www.guardian.co.uk/rickygervais), so I'm checking out the MP4 version of show 1. Might be interesting.

Right, so, what I listen to at the mo -

The Widget Show (http://www.thewidgetshow.com/) - Tech news with a bit of random stuff thrown in. Quite amusing, not parent/work safe though as some profanities are used ;)

Bang Cartoon (http://www.bangcartoon.com/) - My current favourite. Amusing spin on NFL news.

Keith and the Girl (http://www.keithandthegirl.com/) - An out of work stand up comidian and his girlfriend from New York chat about anything and everything. Quite amusing stuff. Definitly not work/parent safe.

PC Gamer Podcast (http://www.pcgamerpodcast.com/) - I guess these guys are like the US version of PC Zone, the PC mag. Obviously, this is chat about PC gaming news.

NFL Rants and Raves (http://www.nflrandr.com/) - General chat about the weeks NFL games and the upcoming matches. Semi amusing too.

I have a few new ones to listen to now, so I'll reprot back if I find any other good ones :) (even though no-one cares  )

No and no. I don't have an i___ anything. No, they don't cost anything. All they are is mp3's of radio show type things.

Ok did you not have an iMate?

I did at one point... I don't quite see what its name has to do with it? It's in no way related to an iPod... and I don't use it now anyway...

Anyway, if you have an iPod Mini... your sorted. The main thing is, when would you listen to them. I listen to them as I travel in and out from work, prefering it these days to music, especially in the early hours of the day when I'm half awake.

Sorry i am a bit of a dumbass when it comes to technology, E.g. i thought the iMate was kind of from the same company as iPod.

i dont think i'd listen to them very much really if i downloaded them, on the way to school i dont really acknowledge much anyway as ive only just got up, :dozey: and on the way back i just speak to mates.

Erm, hello? *taps microphone*

Yes, I'm back in this thread, talking to myself :side: Maybe someday, someone else that listens to podcasts will come by the forum... you never know!

Anyway, first comment, apparently 78% of all podcast listeners are male (http://news.com.com/Podcasts+A+guy+thing/2100-1025_3-6009977.html?tag=nefd.top).

Then, I just wanted to recommend the Ricky Gervais podcast (http://www.guardian.co.uk/rickygervais). (I swear I've mentioned this before, but a quick scan and I can't see it). I can't say I'm a Gervais fan, I don't particularly like Office, but this Podcast is the funniest I listen to. I just listened to the fourth one and was sat there on the tube chuckling away, with people wondering what on earth I was listening to... Ricky isn't really the funny one in it mind you, he has 2 other folk with him, one is just tooooo funny  Anyway, check it out, highly recommended.

Hey Mac-B, I never took podcasts to serious.
But when you pointed out there's a Ricky Gervais podcast out there I just had to go and check it out.
It is hilarious, I'm a great fan of Ricky's and those other blokes just kill me
I reccomend it to anyone with a sense of humour!

So after all I know PODCAST=some music-playing thing?

so I'm using Winamp..^^ or my mp3-player

McBain
29-12-05, 09:33 PM
Nope, podcasts aren't music, they are more like chat shows, or a radio show that you can download.

As far as compatibility, you can listen to them on anything that will play an MP3. In one of my earlier posts I will have given the link for iPodder, which will keep downloading the ones you want automatically, then you just transfer the MP3 player to whatever it is you listen to.

I've used/listened to them for about 6 months, but only lost ones, i used to listen to "the transmission" which is now discontinued so i listen to "the lost podcast with jay and jack" and "the official lost podcast". It's something to listen to whilst at the gym and keeps me up to date with lost news, without me having to visit about 80 forums. I did briefly listen to a cs one "CSDL counter strike podcast" but i unsubscribed when they didnt update it for about a month.

EDIT: on the CSDL one they put a song on every 5-10 mins which might it quite interesting, think about it for next time...

25-02-06, 06:58 PM
Well, one problem I can see, I would think the music you would want to hear is going to be copyrighted. Another, surely you listen to a podcast for information and entertainment? If you want to listen to music, you listen to your MP3's? I don't think we'll be putting music into ours.

Simon
25-02-06, 07:47 PM
Hmm yeah i guess it would be copyrighted, but it did make it more like a radio show, maybe the copyright thing's why they don't do it anymore :?:

Interestingly, the PC Gamer Podcast is hosted by a different guy this week as the previous magazine editor has moved to an Xbox 360 magazine. Then, I notice an Xbox 360 magazine now has it's own podcast... look at the two websites -

PC Gamer Podcast Site (http://www.pcgamerpodcast.com/)

Official Xbox 360 Mag Podcast Site (http://www.oxmpodcast.com/)

Erm, rather similar...

A couple of people have mentioned they listen to the Chris Moyles podcast. I think I might give it a go. All the BBC Radio podcasts are listed here (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/downloadtrial/#programmes).

I listen to the Chris Moyles, Scott Mills (very funny), and the Russell Brand podcasts, The Chris moyles ones are good, but not as good as his shows in the morning, which i listen to everyday.

How many people are actually using iPods to listen to the podcasts? I have a question... I listen to mine on my PDA, using media player, which makes it really easy to skip to wherever I last got to on a podcast. Most of the ones I listen to are an hour long and quite often I only listen to maybe the first 40 minutes on my way into work. With a Nano or a shuffle, how easy is it to either bookmark wherever you were up to, or forward in 40 minutes?

I tried using a cheap MP3 player and it took forever. There was only one fast forward speed which was obviously only meant for 4 minute long tracks.

I use my ugly mini iPod to listen to mine, and its pretty darn good, if im listening to a podcast and then turn my iPod off or pause it and it turns off by itself, when i select that podcast again it remembers where i got to last and starts it from there :)

Also with a Nano if you press the select button once it brings up a screen which allows you to scroll to the certain time that you want, but as explained above it isnt really needed, im not sure how you would do it with a shuffle :? I dont really like MP3 players with no screen, or if they do have a screen, ones without a menu so you dont have to scroll through every song to listen to a certain track.

I usually listen to them when I go on holiday, and as I don't have a mp3 player use my psp.

I'm not sure if it has a bookmark feature as after stopping a podcast part way though I've always carried on with the same one.

The only problem with the psp is its quite easy to accidentally knock the shoulder buttons, which then move you onto the next podcast, you then have to fast forward (at the rather slow ff speed), until you get to where you were.

Keep up the good work guys, it's fun listing to you all burbling away :)

Thanks Stokes. I think it was the Nano I was looking at in John Lewis. Is was normally around

there is a 'hold' on the PSP (its pushing the power button the other way) which makes sure hitting any of the keys wont do stupid things :D hope that helps Elmer :D

PC Gamer podcast this week had Jonathon Wendel (sp?) aka Fatality, the worlds number 1 pro gamer, as their guest this week. A very interesting 20 minute interview into the life of a Pro gamer, I would recommend you have a listen. :)

Just flicking thru the posts on the Podcast thread and I have to agree with McB ref the Ricky Gervais Show Podcasts.

They are now on their 4th series (I think), and as McB said, Ricky isnt the main man. Its this chap - KARL PILKINGTON - who is becoming an international icon.

I'd have to say it is possibly the funniest thing I have ever heard..!

Karl Pilkington's entry in Wikipedia says it all but gives you some great links and quotes to some of his stuff. You really have to hear his opinions and theory on life and the world to beleive it!

And any Podcast with a subject entitled Monkey News gets my vote! :D

Click here for Mr Pilkington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Pilkington)

And the shape of his head too....Apparently its the worlds most downloaded Podcast??

Great to listen to whilst pottering around the house or in the car/tube/bus.......not advised at the gym tho; chuckling in the free weights area with guys way bigger than you isn't advised!

Any one listened to this at all apart from Andy?

I did listen to the free Ricky Gervais podcasts when the Guardian were hosting them (do you have to pay for them now or have they made the latter ones free as well yet). They were ok though I don't believe for one minute that Pilkington isn't playing a character as opposed to actually being like that).

I only tend to really listen to podcasts whilst on holls, On this latest one I really got into the pcgamer and widget ones (thanks for the heads up on those McBain).

I feel we should sue the pants of PcGamer though as they have blatantly ripped off the Lanarchy podcast format!! :o

Anyone found any other good ones? (not to do with bloomin American football) :P

McBain
01-10-06, 10:35 PM
Depending what you like, Kieth and the Girl is a good listen... but I think probably many people on this board might find them 'a bit much'.

Dusted, so do you pay for the Gervais podcasts now? I'm sure Karl plays it a bit to sound that stupid, but he does it well.

Widget has just made a comeback, but I'm not sure I like their new format. They've split into three different groups, one being a UK group led by the English lad and he just didn't sound right. I listened to maybe 20 seconds of that one before deleting it :(

I should mention we could probably do with another co-presenter on ours. Anyone interested, let me know and we'll discuss it ;)
