View Full Version : Lanarchy's Own Podcast?
15-10-05, 03:17 PM
I'm still wondering about this making our own Podcast you know   Would only need to be 20 minutes long, every couple of weeks. There are so many different subjects we could touch on, gaming, Lanarchy news, NFL news, FFLUK news etc...
I wondered if we could record it over TS2 or maybe even SkyPE? The we can use this (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) to edit it and this (http://www.webpasties.com/) to distribute it :)
Stuff it - I'm game if you are ;)
15-10-05, 04:50 PM
I can edit it if you want :D
I have Acoustica 3.1 (slightly better than audacity, but not open source), and a good knowledge of Audacity :D
16-10-05, 01:34 AM
I think we'd be better making it 10-15 minutes long and every week, less stuff more often if you see what I mean. The technical side of it is comparitively easy, I think (I have Audacity too, the way my work's phone system does the on hold music is basically an internal streaming broadcast I have to upload), the more difficult thing might be planning and organising - a theme, a plan, a script and all that - so that it doesn't sound like just a bunch of guys chatting on TS. Mind you - I presume there's some sort of TS bot around that we can just leave in the channel recording during clan matches etc - bound to be some amusing moments we can drop in?
 Shows how much I use TS, you can record to WAV straight from the software (http://www.rar.duhs.duke.edu/rar/en/Comunication_tools/English%20Aula%20TS%20Completa.pdf) (Problem 7), though why I'm finding this out from a medical school website I'm not quite sure...
16-10-05, 09:51 AM
Yeah, thats why I suggested we perhaps use TS2 to make it, should be easy for us to get together on that rather than actually meet up.
I was thinking we could try the week after L21, with maybe a few interviews from the event?
As for a script... I was thinking more along the lines of just having an 'agenda' and maybe a few points arranged before hand based on this.
16-10-05, 10:57 AM
Yep, a script as such might make it sound a little wooden - but the agenda should have some timings on there, someone - the 'presenter' - should be watching that and saying 'and moving onto' at appropriate times, and everyone should have a pretty good idea of what they're going to say before hand (not the exact words, but the points they're going to bring up) - is this what you mean? Nothing says amateur like a bunch of folk going "erm".
So what sort of regular sections would we have? A game review? Match reports? Off topic?
16-10-05, 11:39 AM
This is totally open to suggestion, but I would be looking to have -
Lanarchy News LAN Event updates/reviews
Server activity (FFF?)Gaming News Previews/in production
Released this week
What are you playing this week?
Retro?Hardware Latest tech news
Product reviews?Entertainment What have we all been watching
Movie reviews (Gob, Az or Brikky?)
Any festivals or gigs going on/been toWe would perhaps have 3 or 4 people for each section, but not necessariy the same people for each sections. As I mention above, would be great if Gob, Brikky or Az (or even better, all of them) could do us a little movie review section.
Hardware might be Wint and maybe Helios? NFL would perhaps be me, Wint and Cripp? Etc, etc.
Wint, can we set up email@example.com for people to send in their hundreds of questions or comments ;)
I think this is and excellent idea Andy. I would so love to be involved in it , however Im moving in a months time and will be without a pc for some time.
sure, i'd be up for helping out with the hardware bit ;)
might be a bit cramped though, shoving all that into 20 mins, let alone 10 - 15mins.....
16-10-05, 04:04 PM
I wondered the same, I think I did mention earlier it would be 20 mins or so, and I too believe it could go on a bit, but then its down to use being organised with our time, and being forceful about when its time to drop something and move on.
17-10-05, 09:36 AM
Right, we now find our major stumbling block... what evening to record it on (or most of it on). I said last night a week Friday... but of course, I forgot I'm working then  How about Thursday 27th?
If you need me I can be there.
17-10-05, 01:26 PM
17-10-05, 10:55 PM
I know it was me that was all eager to do this, and I still do... I'm wondering if its not a good idea for me right now... looking at my schedule for the next 3 months, things are getting pretty hectic for me and this might be taking on too much (like I didn't really want too much to do with CSM).
Also, thinking about it, while listening to other Podcasts, the audio quality would be pretty bad (esp Penguin and his mic! )... we might sound a little too amatuer? I dunno, what you guys think?
Just to confirm, I would really love to do this, but if we're doing it, I want it to be done properly... and I'm not sure we can? How much do proper microphones cost? We actually get together (well some of us, could be a diff bunch each week for that matter) to record it decent quality etc?
18-10-05, 03:48 PM
You could get a decent quality mic for around
19-10-05, 04:30 PM

12-02-06, 12:37 AM
Right, I still think this is worth a pop. I've now got the theory of how this can be done... Audacity can change where it recording from, be it microphone, line or "what you hear", so if my main PC was set up as a Skype conference call, and everyone connects to that and we set the PC to record "what it hears", this should work.
The problem is everyone would be 'Skype quality' as it where. The other alternative would be to have everyone in one place, with mics going through a mixer and into the recording PC... which would be much better quality, but then how do we have 'guests' join us through Skype?
Can we have a sound input playing through the PC speakers, and people connecting in via Skype?
Infact, while typing this, Helios has come up with... people direct on the mixer with mics, a PC connected to the mixer with Skype so they go through the mixer too and then the mixer connected to the main recording PC
Then... we need to figure how we can give a live feed so we can do call in shows  (Winamp/shoutcast possibly?)
**EDIT** Podcast guide here (http://www.fmstudio.com/blog/2006/01/free-podcast-tutorial-learn-to-podcast.html).
12-02-06, 06:32 PM
call in shows would be cool. I can just see it now, ring ring ring ring...<click> "hello, this is Mcbain here, you are live on air!", then some noob moans about hacking on the servers.
rofl.... **Click** Mcbain - " And that user has just been banned"
13-02-06, 09:40 PM
Okay, I propose we have a crack at this, probably just over Skype on Friday 24th February, after the FragFest Friday that week, at around 10pm. Basically I'm looking for 2 or 3 other senior members :)
i should be up for it, sepending on what you want me babble about ;)
(If its womans fashoin, you're on yer own)
13-02-06, 10:28 PM
Should be about :D
I may be about but I may have had a few drinks. :)
Lestat - (in his sloshed voice that we all know ;) ) "good *hic* evening everyone, and tonight i will be talking to you about... *thump*"
McBain - "Sorry about that listeners, it apears that lestat has collapsed..."
14-02-06, 12:35 PM
Should make for a good show ;)
Okay, so it's likely to be myself, Helios, Penguin, Lestat and maybe Sc00bs? It might no be all of us at the same time, it might be 2 or 3 main hosts, with others popping in for specific things. We'll see...
I'd love for someone to be available for movie reviews. Any takers? (Would only be 3 mins or so.)
We'll see next year or so when i'm able to speak some proper english :D
Yeah I should be able to be about...
Makes mental note to go download skype ;)
thats a good point, and a proper mic :/
Ahh skype has anyone got a ad free version then?
15-02-06, 09:55 AM
There are ads in Skype? Where abouts?
**EDIT** When you guys get it, please add AndyCr15
15-02-06, 12:58 PM
I dont mind phoning in and talking about crap! ;)
15-02-06, 09:03 PM
I'm bordering on getting this cheap mixer on eBay, but how many people would actually be able to get to Finchley to record the podcast? If no-one can, it wouldn't really be worth it anyway :)
I could every so often college work permitting
22-02-06, 08:48 PM
If anyone has time, maybe not before this coming Podcast recording, but might be able to do it in time for the next (if we do another :side: ) I see there are demo's for -
Commandos Strike Force (http://www.fileplanet.com/160887/160000/fileinfo/Commandos-Strike-Force-Demo) and Star Wars Empire at War (http://www.fileplanet.com/159774/150000/fileinfo/Star-Wars:-Empire-at-War-Demo)
Might be interesting for us to comment on?
22-02-06, 08:55 PM
I will download the commandos demo and give you some feedback if that helps?
I have the empire at war demo , and uhm getting the full game :)
23-02-06, 03:42 PM
Okay, here's where the community at large can help us out. We have a seperate e-mail account for the podcast - firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are taking mp3 questions (literally record yourself asking your question, please no longer than about 30 seconds) or straight up e-mail questions on hardware, upgrades, games, software etc...
09-06-06, 10:41 PM
Anyone got comments on the last podcast (#7). We realised afterwards we waffled far too much. Was it still entertaining though? Or do we need to try harder to stick to a theme in the future?
Obvoiusly no one listened to it :( or else they all fell asleep before the end :D
I think we mentioned that you could watch the World cup online, it appears that you need to have a TV license (http://networks.silicon.com/webwatch/0,39024667,39159437,00.htm) to do so though.
Did we mention that in the podcast or is there another thread about it somewhere? I looked, but did not find (or search tbh)
12-06-06, 10:34 AM
I have listened to about half of it, but havent got round to listening to the rest yet, it was rather long though :)
As much as i have listened to it was good, you do tend do drift of subject every now and again though ;)
Mercenary / Stokes :P
not got around to it. Only really listened to number 6 so far.
I don't remember seeing a link for podcasy #7 otherwise I would have listened to it already. Maybe I missed the announcement with the link attached?
We kinda don't make them just expect people to be alerted by there feeds or itunes
I enjoyed it as usual. :D I didn't personally mind the off subject rambles.
Keep a special ear out for McBain doing an impression of a shotgun and an industrious person in the background doing some washing up/clearing away at one point.
If like me you don't have any fancy feeds set up, Just bookmark this link to download them from. http://feeds.feedburner.com/LanarchyPodcasts
i, like elmer enjoyed the rants and off topic convos lol. and yes i do also like all the things that make our podcast unique

Could I ask everyone to go and vote for out Podcast please :) Clicky here (http://www.podcastalley.com/podcast_details.php?pod_id=21243) and then click 'vote'. You'll need to enter your e-mail and then click the link in the mail they send you. We only need 10 votes this month to make the Top 50 Tech Podcasts and we already have 6
I would add, if you can vote again from work, go for it! :) It seems to only allow 1 vote per IP, so vote from home and work for double effect
Thanks for your time.

Hey, I just joined, I've introduced myself in the other thread.
Just wanted to say thanks for the podcast, found it a few days ago, been enjoying listening at work. I voted for it too as suggested, also added a short review on itunes, hope that's ok. I've tried a few gaming/PC podcasts but generally got bored with them, the only one I have stuck with up till now is the PC gamer one, but I'll add yours to that select list! Interesting and made me chuckle a good few times too. Cheers again.
18-09-06, 10:43 PM
That's great to hear. We don't get much feed back from people outside the community on the podcasts (and not that much from people within the community for that matter  ) so it's nice to hear this, thanks. Have you found us because of the podcast then, or you've listened to the podcast after you've found our site?
If the former, how did you come across our podcast? Thanks :)
19-09-06, 02:55 PM
I found your community here because of the podcast!
Basically I was searching for podcasts about gaming in the uk. I found your show using google - podfeet.net or something came up tops I think, gave a few shows a listen, and hey, I liked what I heard. Then after that I found your site here. It's probably an unusual way around of doing things I know!
02-10-06, 10:12 AM
Don't forget to get voting again for the new month :)

It's such a simple and quick way of helping the community, please head over and place a vote for us.
07-12-06, 04:37 AM
