OK OK - I really need some help in ascertaining what to get for my next PC.

This is the spec thus far that I have quoted for on eBuyer

1 x Antec Plusview 1000 4x5.25 5x3.5 ATX Tower Case with Side Window 44356

2 x Seagate Barracuda 80Gb 7200rpm UDMA100 Hard Drive - OEM - (gonna stick it in RAID 0 config for speed)

1 x D865perl Motherboard SKT478 I865pe Atx AGP 8x Serial ATA, Flexible 6 Channel Audio 49440

1 x QTEC 400 Watt PSU P4 ready Twin Fan Retail Boxed 51095

1 x Intel Pentium 4 2.6ghz 800FSB SKT478 512k Cache Retail Box

Now I'm going for a Intel chip due to the fact that with the 800FSB of the 2.6G CPU it can be clocked with no probs up to 3.2Ghz. I already have a thermaltake cooling kit sitting here ready for me to buy the rest of the bits and pieces - but I would appreciate thoughts and opinions from real users on AMD or Intel.....Muck thankx

If speed is a key factor how much more is a 15000rpm 72Gig SCSI?

Hmmmm - didn't think of a SCSI due to costing - the Barracudas seems to have superb reviews, and with the RAID 0 config it should allow for faster processing.

The SCSI 72gb's are pretty pricey!

Hard Disk Drive Atlas 15k 73gb Ultra 320 Scsi 68pin 15000rpm - Oem -

Yeah, but you're still bound by the limitations of the IDE interface (max two devices on one connection, no duplexing), it'll never be as fast as a decent SCSI.

Will find out - I'll have a bash on tomshardware.com - that should give me some decent info.

BTW - whats the set up you have on your rig W-mute?

I'm the SCSI kid... :D
Though at some point I need to replace my SCSI card (mines 6 years old) and my 'boot' HDD (a 4.3 GB old IBM SCSI drive)
I have 3 HDDs in my PC, none of them very big, but the sum of the parts is equal to the task in hand;
1 old 4.3 GB IBM (I like IBM SCSI HDDs) U2W SCSI HDD
1 U160 18 GB IBM SCSI (4.3 ms seek, 10K rpm!) HDD
& 1 U2W 9GB IBM SCSI HDD.

One day I'll replace the 2 older ones and replace my old Adaptec 2940 card with something a bit more kick ass. Though I also want a 8x AGP slot on my MoBo at some point so I may get a new MoBo with on board SCSI! (Asus do one that I'm thinking about, but I'm waiting for a 333MHz Dual Athlon board - Don't want much do I? :P)

Crikey!

Kind of puts my specs to shame dont it! :?

In my defence, I am on a budget and am going thru the motions of buying a house now so I think the specs I want should see me thru!

I've been building my PC as a sort of 'rolling' project for about 6 years. It's not actually that kick ass any more (hence the desire to upgrade), but I buy bits when i can afford them (which isn't often :( ) so slowly it keeps going in the right direction.

I remember someone saying that you can put 2 Athlon XP processors on a dual board with no problems. I've asked the question of a reseller and was told that you can't and that you DO really need to be running MPs. Can anyone shed any light on this?
I'd assume that you can run 1 XP on a dual board on it's own with no probs though? - I'm just thinking of the easiest, least painful on the wallet upgrade path.

Still no news yet Sc00bs -I will give Paul a shove in the AM........

BTW - (blatant advertising here....) - I work for a co in Birmingham who do IT Solutions & Support and we have a *snazzy* system that d-loads the cheapest prices from our suppliers on a dialy basis. In terms of CPUs/Mobo etc its not that gr8 (Ebuyer kix ass), but we do have amazing deals on desktops and laptops....get this.......

This morning we had a price of

Twas me that was saying - and I read it in a O'Reilly book, which basically was of the opinion that corporate types were uncomfortable buying the regular processors for multi systems so they shipped the M ones which were technically equivalent but superior in price. The book was copyright 1999 though IIRC, so things may have changed. Your re-seller may have more accurate and up to date information, then again he may just be protecting his margins :D

Which one? :P (Currently running at 2 desktops, 1 laptop, a PDA and bits of a couple servers, plus the work desktop, which isn't at home so doesn't really count, the work laptop, which is at home, and the work PDA - I'm thinking if I could get one of those distributed processing apps up and running I could be selling processing time to genetic research institutions...)

Having done some research into this my self. It appears that you can (by and large) run 1 XP processor on a dual board, but when you come to want a second processor they both have to be MPs. As yet I've not managed to find anything (even on some very dodgy looking forums) to make me believe that you can get away with 2 XPs on the same board (with current chips, etc...

So I'm thinking that I'll have to buy a board and run my existing processor off it, then buy a MP and then buy another MP once I can afford it...

As it stands I can't get a MoBO to the spec I want yet so Ive got a while to squeak a credit card off it's limit far enough for me to be able to do this ;)
