View Full Version : What next?
Just got paid, and got a decent pay day coming up next. So Im thinking about buying some more bits for my PC.
AMD XP1700+
768MB DDR
115GB 7200rpm
19GB 5400rpm
FX5200 128MB
CDRW 8x4x32
DSP-500s (Headphones with built in sound card)
I think my first move is going to be get a CDRW/DVD drive, about
So you've got about 150 quid left?
Well here's a few options (none of which should be taken seriously...)
A really pointlessly expensive K/B and Mouse? :)
A gigabit LAN card and 2 port gigabit switch! :D
A new case with extra whizzy bits? :?:
A DVD R thingy?
A Quad Xeon MoBo (though you wouldn't have any cash left for any processors, but it'll SOUND good!)? :P :D
Though you do have other options, here are but 3:
Laid? :P
High? :P
Laid and High :beep: *
:spam:
*N.B.the views of this individual do not necessarily concur with the views of LANarchy as a whole, nothing in ths post should be taken seriously and remember kids - don't do drugs!**
**I mean the last bit
A really pointlessly expensive K/B and Mouse?
I lie mice :P
A gigabit LAN card and 2 port gigabit switch!
To connect me to?
A new case with extra whizzy bits?
Considering it
A DVD R thingy?
Dont feel the need for it
A Quad Xeon MoBo (though you wouldn't have any cash left for any processors, but it'll SOUND good!)?
Yeah, like you said :P I could try slamming my AMD on it, might work
-----
Im planning on getting a TFT in a few months, I just want to get some more bits then I think I'll get one around October time.
Speakers, I've got them, but they just sit there and dont get used. I use my headphones because basically, best sound quality you're going to find and my PC is next to the living room, so people dont like my music on really loud :(
Mini Fridge, got one :)

Microsoft reinvents the mouse wheel
Tom Bramwell 09:39 11/08/2003
Wheely?
Microsoft is planning to add Tilt Wheel Technology to its popular range of computer mice, the company announced last week, in a move which is sure to have significant connotations for hardcore PC gamers.
The Tilt Wheel Technology adds another axis of scrolling to the ubiquitous mouse wheel, allowing users to move left and right by tilting the wheel with their finger, as well as up and down in the traditional manner. It won't be a four-way scroll wheel, but in many respects that's better for PC gamers.
Microsoft's official announcement points out the potential business applications (quicker navigation of large spreadsheets and unwieldy web sites), but the tilt could also be put to good use by gamers. In first person shooter titles, for example, there is always a need for faster inventory or weapon switching, and strafing or binding are other functions that might also benefit from Tilt Wheel Technology.
Microsoft plans to launch three TWT equipped mice on September 3rd in the US, one corded and two cordless at 27MHz, and they will also have a feature that allows users to toggle applications by pressing down on the wheel - a function that rodent rivals Logitech introduced a year ago.
However Logitech senior product manager Lloyd Klarke isn't convinced of TWT's worth.
"It is not to say that horizontal scrolling is good or bad, but the things that customers say they want to do with their mouse are the things we have already implemented," he said last week, going on to claim that emphasis on a scroll wheel's 'click' is far more important - and something that TWT won't be able to accomplish horizontally.
We're guessing that Mr. Klarke doesn't play much Counter-Strike.
one of those?

Hi all. Not sure why you are buying a XP 1700, wouldn't a XP 2100 be better and they are cheaper. Just a suggestion
**This is taken from a post on the Barton 2500 thread - thought it may get some air and comments here! **
OK OK - I really need some help in ascertaining what to get for my next PC.
This is the spec thus far that I have quoted for on eBuyer
1 x Antec Plusview 1000 4x5.25 5x3.5 ATX Tower Case with Side Window 44356
2 x Seagate Barracuda 80Gb 7200rpm UDMA100 Hard Drive - OEM - (gonna stick it in RAID 0 config for speed)
1 x D865perl Motherboard SKT478 I865pe Atx AGP 8x Serial ATA, Flexible 6 Channel Audio 49440
1 x QTEC 400 Watt PSU P4 ready Twin Fan Retail Boxed 51095
1 x Intel Pentium 4 2.6ghz 800FSB SKT478 512k Cache Retail Box
Now I'm going for a Intel chip due to the fact that with the 800FSB of the 2.6G CPU it can be clocked with no probs up to 3.2Ghz. I already have a thermaltake cooling kit sitting here ready for me to buy the rest of the bits and pieces - but I would appreciate thoughts and opinions from real users on AMD or Intel.....Muck thankx
Im not buying it, I already own it. Im seeing what I want next.
Anyway, decided to get a new 19" monitor, then I can get my old system out and then I can have this PC to myself :) sorted
Not a bad choice all things considered. Though you don't want to be lugging it to LANs! :)
Dusted.
I like Athlon chips 'cos you get the same performance for less money, but if money is no object (and it doesn''t look like it is  ) Then why not go Intel?
I have to be honest and admit that I've really stopped paying attention to what Intel are doing these days, but it all sounds good so far.
The only thing I can possibly add is that I have a number of Laptops that I'm resposible for at work. 1 is an Athlon XP 1500+ and the others are P4 1.8 Ghz. Now it's not an even comparisom cos the Athlon is paired with 512 Mb of Ram and the P4s only have 256, but the Athlon based one is WAY quicker that the P4s at a lot lower CPU clock speed... Also the modern Athlon Boards allow you to overclock 'till you're blue in the face! (Though I don't know what the score is with the P4 Boards...)

Oh dear, after my last 19" monitor I don't think I would ever want another. I would have saved a little longer and bought an 18" TFT (with larger visible screen size) for only around
Scoobs - thankx for the opinion on AMD et al....I know that in the overclocking world, AMD do get a good press, yet Intel with the new 800FSB seem to be able to gain a great deal with not much tweaking.
If I'm looking at a 2.6Ghz 800FSB Intel - what is the comparitive AMD CPU? :?: 2600........ 2800XP??
My main concern is that I will purchase a mobo and CPU that is upgradeable but at the moment will last 1.5 yrs or so........so a bit of an investment, kind of..........(digits crossed!) and can be overclocked to a degree to keep up with the 64bit CPUS and P9's that will come out!
Answers/opinions/links on a postcard to..........
Btw, really dont like the sound of that new mouse wheel. Surely that is just gonna be a pain in the ass?

The 2600XP (real clock speed 2.1Ghzish) would be comparable to the P4 2.6. Though if you start looking at prices What a 2.6 P4 will cost you will buy you a 2800 'Barton'. And will get you close to a 3000 Barton (with all the overclocking potential that brings)

I'd go Athlon, but I suspect that I'm Biased... :)
