View Full Version : Internet Explorer Must Have's
Spell Checker (http://www.iespell.com/)
This works on forums, so enter your reply, right click and select 'Check Spelling' and it works just like Word and points out any mistakes!
It's such a shame HUNTER uses Mozilla, cause this would be perfect for him! Nevermind, me, Sc00bs and Skavorn will be able to make good use of it ;)
(Thanks to someone on the Babblers (http://forums.babblers.co.uk/)forum for that one).
MyIE2 (http://www.myie2.com/html_en/home.htm)
This one is thanks to Khan from UKLans (http://www.uklans.com/Forums/viewtopic.php?t=789). It's basically a plug-in for IE which allows tabbed browsing, pop-up stopper and other stuff.
shame that isnt it.
If i was an IE user I would already have it ;)
Downloading it now... Must remember to do this at home too. I'll let you know...
So lets see if the spell checker is any good then shall we... I'#ll just type some gibberish into here, remembering not to look up and then I'll see how close it ends up to English without me having to go back and edit it all twice.
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog!
Hey THAT IS COOL! Everyone go and download this now! :D

It's pretty good isn't it :)

Does it spell check automatically? Or do you have to click something to spell check?
I'm fairly sure there is a spell checker type type thing for Mozilla (it's probably a sidebar - guess I'll have to go and look now!), but having the capabilty to spell check and actually performing the spell check are tasks that don't necessarily converge...

wicked!!! Just seen the post now. Of course its a must for me!!
No, it's not automatic...but how many times do me or Sc00by end up with some gibberish word and (sp?) after it :)

But I'm presuming it's easier than either cutting and pasting into Word and pressing F7 or opening a new browser tab and pasting it into dictionary.com? Because otherwise you'd be doing that already...
Of course spell checkers everywhere are still confused by the classics: where/wear/were and there/their/they're. It's when we get intelligent spell/grammar checkers I'll be impressed. :)
Rob
It's dead easy to use, you type, right click and select 'Check spelling' and then it offers suggestions for 'McBain' and 'Wintermute', but also some for 'proper' misspellings... (Though it doesn't deal with your examples, nor does it cope if you miss a letter off the end of a word making a shorter word that is still a word (e.g.: rode rod or code cod, one on, etc...)
MyIE2 0.8.350 just got released. I downloaded that (http://www.myie2.com/html_en/update.htm) and had a look round at some plugins (http://www.myie2.smsnet.pl/). I got one that tells me the last time a page was updated and another (Wint will like this one) that lets me highlight any word on a webpage, click a button and it looks it up on Dictionary.com for me
Anyone know how I set MyIE2 as my default browser though? If I click a link in an e-mail it still opens normal IE.

If it's not available under 'Set Program Access and Defaults' on the start menu then I don't know, maybe some kind of registry hack?
Rob
I've found a program called Set Browser (http://www.pc-tools.net/win32/freeware/setbrowser/) that allows you to change what browser Windows accepts as default.
Unfortunatly, now when I click a link in an e-mail it not only opens MyIE2 but it tries to 'Locate Link Browser' and opens a save box? Any ideas?
**EDIT** I now realise it just wanted me to tell it what program to open the link in (even though it has already opened it in MyIE2?) so I browsed for the MyIE2.exe and selected it and now all is hunky dorey :)
Out if interest, does Mozilla automatically set itself as the default browser?

Out if interest, does Mozilla automatically set itself as the default browser?
it asks if you want it to be the default and, like ie, when you start it, will prompt you to make it the default if it's not (unless you tick the "piss off and don't bother me with this stupid question ever again" box)

me thinks may need this! :P
What we also need is a grammar checker and something with a bit of AI that can work out what we're trying to say and inserts all the missing words.... **looks up**

Noticed today that the latest Mozilla (1.5RC1) has spell checker built into the email client. I'd imagine it won't be too long before people figure out how to access the functionality from elsewhere in the program.
Also, don't know how many folk are following this but:

One of the possible outcomes from this is that Microsoft will remove all plugins from IE, which will seriously cripple it as a browser (no inline video and audio content). If that happens then either everyone will start using new browsers (unlikely), or everyone will have to re-design their websites to stop using things like Flash and Media Player.
There has been some panic and recrimination:

And also the usual Evil Empire conspiracy theories:
http://www.zeldman.com/daily/0903b.shtml#losetowin
The outcome of all this will actually be quite important as to how we all use the web over the next decade or so...
Rob
Not sure that they'll remove the plugin features. when push comes to shove and they've run out of appeals they pay and licence it I'm sure...

Unless they have a suitable replacement technology of their own, which is what the conspiracy theory is about.
Rob
MyIE 2 was updated last week, looks like I missed quite a few updates myself...
Clicky clicky (http://www.myie2.com/html_en/update.htm)
It would appear MyIE is now switching to be Maxthon (http://www.maxthon.com/en/download.htm). It says its a Beta and they don't recommend using it just yet.... so I'll probably wait a while.
