View Full Version : Team Fortress 2

We mentioned it on the podcast yesterday, Valve have announced Team Fortress 2 will be coming to Source at some point soon. Here's a first look at the cartoonish style graphics that are to be used -

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2006/07/tf-2-condensed-photo.jpg (http://www.joystiq.com/media/2006/07/team_fortress_2_group_photo.jpg)

Team Fortress 2 now sports a cartoonish art style and a 60's spy feel akin to that of Monolith's No One Lives Forever -- certainly a description you'd never expect to be about a game from Valve.

Can't wait for this. Counterstrike never managed to grab my attention when it first came out as I was playing TF all the time. And to think, I used to be playing TF with a dial up modem and onboard graphics

At long last! TFC was the first online game I really got into. Not too keen on those graphics, but as long as they keep the gameplay they've got a customer in me! Conc nades FTW! Any chance of LNY gettin a team together for when this gets released?

McBain
16-07-06, 04:15 PM
Very slim chance I would think. UT2007 will be above it in the pecking order. There's only so much time we can give each game...

what about the other game in the pack Portal?

yea, i remember watching my bro play it... i was about 7 then :P i always wanted to play it.. lol... I dunno about the cartoonish theme.... it looks more abit like a comedy game... Although, XIII (13) on PS2, was cartoon based and it was a really good game to play. I think i will be getting this.

If you're not into the whole cartoonish graphics style, then have a look at Fortress Forever (http://www.fortress-forever.com/). It's a free source-mod, that is trying to bring all the good parts (including maps) from TFC, but bringing it up-to-date on the source engine. It looks very promising, but it seems that work on it as-of-late has been in a bit of a slump.

Might be worth us throwing a team together for?

I'm hoping as we near the release of this, we'll definitely get ourselves a server of it, right from the word go. This usually means it will be relatively busy and we can recruit off it perhaps :)

I'm very much looking forward to TF2, should be good for the rush around madly first person shootering :D

Lets hope it is a bit more imba than the old version, in matches all you had were medics and HW guys/engineers every other class was useless. Personally while conc jumping was fun i thought it ruined the game.

Looks like they have come up with a dynamic map system so maps will change every time you play them.

"As for how the dynamic maps work in practice, that was hard to judge. The match we played on Hydro, the first map to use this special game mode, was enormous fun. But as extensive as our playtest was, they didn't let us play on the map for three years, and that's the kind of heavy use under which this system should flourish. What we did notice is that this is not just a Battlefield type system with some control points 'locked'. When a point is not in play, routes to that section of the map are physically blocked off, so the physical shape of the map is different for every combination of points. That forces you to revise your mental picture of the map, and see it as fresh again."

McBain

There's a new video up, introducing the heavy weapons guy. It's only 13 meg, just over a minute long. Get it from Gamers Hell (http://www.gamershell.com/download_19169.shtml).

Lestat

9th October? It's in the diary! Better not be Vista exclusive like those copies of Halo 2 I saw or I might just have to make my machine dual boot Vista as well as good 'ol XP!

I like these compliamations though because as a new gamer who's unsure about all the different epsiodes and expanison packs, and because I own very few games, they save me money and hastle. The Battlefield 2 pack is a good example, and second on my list!

But TF2 will be great as long as it maintains the gameplay and playability value of its predecesor

McBain
21-09-07, 05:22 PM
I was hoping to have a TF2 server up ASAP, unfortunately I've hardly been at home this week. Having a look now, but it doesn't seem to be as simple as a CSS server at present. I'll try and get it sorted, but I'm off to Leicester in a couple of hours... Lestat? Any chance you can fix if I don't have time?

Natharn
22-09-07, 01:41 AM
Server is up, very nice work McBain :)

however I have a little suggestion.

Put at least 2fort on the map rotation or it gets very boring.

and there is also something about games. the first one to 3 games wins the match and then a new map or new match starts

Natharn
22-09-07, 08:42 PM
argh :(( I keep getting stuck on loading screen after a map change so I got to restart my pc.

also connection to it for the first time takes 4-5 minutes

anyone know how the fuck I got to fix it because its bloody annoying

(it takes ages doing over "retrieving server info"

yeh atm all the servers come under the css look in xfire, or are you not seeing them there either??

yeh same as me then, i dont know why. Maby because the game is not finished or needs updates etc or xfire does to recognise it. Otherwise im stumped.

Lestat

Arctic
24-09-07, 10:29 AM
Team Fortress 2 revolves completely around the Steam Community.

It works for me.
Do you have updated drivers?

[OLSC]Hitman
24-09-07, 10:41 AM
Yes, I have the latest drivers, and it works in CS:S and DOD:S.

It maybe something to do with Kaspersky Anti-Virus, as apparently there is a known issue.

I'll uninstall and go back to AVG!

Arctic
24-09-07, 10:44 AM
Avast is very nice for gaming too.
edit: there's also an issue with the bebox and any speedtouch box

[OLSC]Hitman

Problem solved, uninstalled Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 and Steam Community now works fine in TF2!

Good job it was only the 30 day free trial, gone back to good old AVG!

well finally got this and yes its a good game.

there are some defo issue with some classes i feel. i think the scout should not have a shotgun makes it to strong so alot of people choose this class making maps end very quickly cause you have no defence.

i think the heavys gun should be more powerful so many time i kept getting critical hits on people 2 or 3 times and they wouldnt die

id probs give the game 8 out of 10 will be nice to see how long peeps on this forum play it for. i think i might have initial hype then tail off.

Arctic
25-09-07, 10:04 AM
Heavy, pyro, and demo vs. scout is an easy defence.

Engineer is being whored a bit too much on some maps (the one with multiple locations, i don't think it's hydro though, there's no satelite).

Scout shotty isn't that bad actually, it hurts at point blank but anything more than a few meters and it doesnt hurt all that much.

I do think there need to be stuff to restrict classes a bit, like max. 2 scouts on a 10 man team. It's ridiculous when you're on TC_Hydro and 6 out of 10 players on a team are scouts and they just zerg the control point and win the map.

I hadn't played a Spy much, up until a couple days ago when I finally figured out how they work. How much fun are they!

For those who might be in the same boat...

Doesnt matter which weapon you have out, right click turns you invisible. Invisibility recharges very slowely though, so use it sparingly.

You cant do ANYTHING while invis. Become visible again to attack etc.

When you change to a disguise you take on the name of one of the opposition, therefor, dont do it when its just 4 on 4, as chances are youll be figured out.

To blow up a centry gun, disguise, run up to it and bring out your zapper, left click when next to the gun. Youll stay disguised, so hopefully the engineer comes running to knock of the zapper. Stab him in the back, but that brings you out of your disguise, so go invis straight after

When maps are loading and it shows your best scores, Spy always used to be something like 3, while the others were 9-14, now Spy is 12 :) How much fun is it running around amongst the enemy, stabbing them, running off invisible and then coming back disguised again

Hellcom
25-10-07, 04:26 PM
Psh, I had no medic on mah ass :P.

I broke my soldier record as of late - stats are lies and this is why :

First time was fair & square : was on 2fort and I played offense and defense at same time - got tons of kills but never died :P.

Second time :

I broke from 30 to 32 on dustbowl's area 3, cap 1 - the little corridor of doom - spammed tons of rockets in there this whole time and all I could see was [LNY]Hellcom <rawkeet piccy> Nubcaek123456.

And Nath, while sticking to soldier means you'll be good at it - you can only get so good in TF2 that but after that, it doesn't matter.

TF2 is designed so "ubarleetsoldier Natharn" can't beat 4 of "ultra newbie2k7". Plus, being able to switch classes at leisure is good :P.

TF2 didn't catch my attention for long as I effectively played the game with knowledge of how 75% of the game's classes and how they work. I expected some fancy tricks or techniques but TF2 contains none :(.

TFTrue Plugin 1.0
--------------------

Description
-----------
The TFTrue plugin creates 5 new cvars for server owners to control aspects of Team Fortress 2 normally hidden to users. These cvars control critical hit chance, friendly fire, and respawn time.

Installation
------------
Create a directory in your team fortress 2 folder called addons (don't worry if one already exists)
Copy all files from this archive into the addons folder
An example directory would be
C:\srcds\orangebox\tf\addons\TFTrue.dll
Load the plugin one of two ways:
1. Restart the server
2. Execute the command 'plugin_load ../tf/addons/TFTrue'

CVars
-----

tftrue_crit_chance
The chance to do critical damage (decimal percentage)

tftrue_melee_crit_chance
The chance to do critical damage with a melee attack (decimal percentage)

tftrue_rapid_crit_chance
The chance to do critical damage when firing rapidly (decimal percentage)

tftrue_friendlyfire
Players will get hurt if a member of the same team hurts them

tftrue_respawnwavetime
Loose respawn timer. Tests have shown this value to be subject to some scalar determined by the game
during play. For instant respawn set this to 0.

Ive seen this on other servers. Always crit, almost instant spawn and so on.

It took the fun out of the game a bit when you loosing a fire fight and then you crit like mad. But was still fun for a bit.

EDIT: ps. the friendly fire would be annoying when trying to find a spy.

Natharn
29-10-07, 04:01 PM
also if you try to hit a spy near an engy or near anyone else you might just blow that person up to so what you might get is peoples standing against the other teammate so you will blow em up too and stuff..

well you get the idea ;-)

Psh, only nubs need criticals. :P.

If it was up to me, I'd reduce spawn times to something between 7 to 15 and remove random-criticals leaving only those which are hitbox-triggered.

C'mon, I mean, how many times a scout killed you from 10 miles away just because he rolled a "amagawd critical hit!!!111"? :P

Yeah I'd also remove criticals they are really annoying when you get one shot killed just because someone got lucky with a crit

So? It's part of the game.
All these mods ruin that.

Just because something's intended to be part of a game doesn't mean the game can't be improved

Can you tell me how removing random, non-hitbox criticals can possibly ruin the game?

It's simple : I don't want shots to be a matter of lottery, I want them to act completely ordinary - not a spin&win.

Respawn times, if fiddled with to an extreme end CAN ruin the game but not removing random criticals.

After all, the game wasn't designed around criticals - balance wouldn't go haywire by removing a random dice-roll element.

And honestly, if they "balanced the game" by relying on a random element, that's a very piss poor job, no?

Contrary to popular belief, developers are NOT infallible.

I have to say aren't the Crits random not hitbox based. I also find they depend on what your doing or just did (e.g. capture a point or kill someone.)

But they are great fun. You cant honestly say you hate the one hit crits on you but when you do then their amasing (prob going in the wrong direction here)

But its how the game works and its works well. You have to say before you knew they could be changed you would have happly go on with out knowing.

bob's 2cents.

I find that they're quite spastically random, not performance based.

The dev comment itself is very vague - how do you define "momentum"?

Even if they truly are largely influenced by performance, I believe it's a very poor way of rewarding good players.

This one time, a really bad soldier shot THREE critical rockets in a ROW. Luckily, he sucked ass and didn't manage to hit me with any of them - they were way off track.

Care to explain? I occasionally see such situations :|.

Hitbox-based criticals do exist : See headshots for sniper and backstabs for spy.

Lowering the critical-hit damage multiplier isn't an option as it would massively nerf spies and snipers.

Criticals don't add any fun to the game - more like a massive element of frustration in my opinion. I can't lie and say I don't like criticals even when I'm on the sending end but I'd honestly rather have them completely removed as it's a very poor idea.

Just because something works doesn't mean you can't improve it. With a mindset like that, technology would've never advanced - we'd still be carrying things ourselves and moving on foot - why invent the wheel when your own feet work and work well?

Perhaps I wouldn't mind criticals if they had a more sane damage multiplier....

The sniper's headshot is hitbox based, which is fair enough. random crits are just plain annoying, when you get them it's not really satisfying as you know how annoying it is when you're hit by them

You have the same situation sometimes :] its based on chance, means if you play ALOT your crits equal out :)

so dont monitor it on a short timeframe. also the maps take some time to win if you are both strong teams.

so its equal imo :)

Yeah But unlike CSS this is supposed to be more fun for the casual player, not a bunch of idiots standing around calling valve faggots :P

if I have to take down a SG I really love a crit with it :) still the chances are low so I got to shoot a few rockets till I get one :P

Lol Lestat nice one

Yeah you need the crit as a soldier or the engineer can sit behind it untill the soldier invun wears off.

I agree the system probably is fair, but i'm just not a fan of it. I'd rather kill someone normally than with a crit, and the same goes for dying

well, i myself like to see a critical rocket go and fly into an enemy heavy, saving myself, and teammates from certain doom.

i think it's just sad that you all have to cry about something that is completely fair play and creates a fun game for people who may not be acomplished gamers...

The "criticals help newbies" aspect of it is about as weak as arguing that all players should be given aimbot assistance by the game in order to "make the game fun" for "unaccomplished gamers".

See Halo for xbox - compare to Halo PC.

*I'm enjoying this argument, I think >.>.*
