An earthquake with a magnitude of at least 4.3 has shaken parts of Kent, damaging buildings and disrupting electricity supplies.

Emergency services have received reports of structural damage including cracked walls and fallen chimneys in Folkestone and nearby areas.

The British Geological Survey said the tremor, which occurred at 0819 BST, had its epicentre out in the Dover Straits.

It said it was the largest quake in the UK since the one in Dudley in 2002.

I thought we weren't supposed to get earthquakes here? Thats what I was taught at school!

You can get earthquakes pretty much anywhere, but our techtonic plates dont build up so much friction as those in say America so we dont suffer form major earthquakes..

We probably get a few 1-2.5 scaled ones we just dont notice them.

We do get a lot of earthquakes, just very minor ones. I bet this latest quake sets a load of doom sayers off on another rant of the dangers of global warming

You can see all the UK earthquakes in the last 30 days (http://www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/recent_events/recent_events.html). According to geologyshop.co.uk (http://www.geologyshop.co.uk/ukequakes.htm) our largest quake was in 1580 and was under 6 on the Richter scale.
