Default Bad Company 2 Servers

For those of you who havent heard there is some fresh news about bad company 2's servers:

As you know there is some uncertainty over the dedicated servers and how it will work.

Dice will not be making dedicated server files for Battlefield Bad Company 2 available to players. Citing 'security and integrity of our game and dedicated servers', instead they will lease the use of dedicated servers to the players.

Locking down the server files will mean no mods or alteration of the standard game experience. As they have stated before this means they are correct in that the multiplayer will still have dedicated servers, but the code for them will not be publicly available. So LAN play via dedicated servers will be dead for this game as welll it seems.

Another one bites the dust. I cant help feeling that pc gamers are being isolated from the rest of the industry. The ability to game with people in a LAN (in my opinion) is essential and yet publishers and developers still decide to block this function.
I do however realise why they are making this blunt decision and that it can be summed up in one word; piracy. PC's are an open platform, unlike consoles. Allowing these server files to fall into the wrong hands leads to illegal hacks and mods and also aids programmers to make illegal copies to share. But why punish us hard working decent folk? We pay for our games, we should take some kind of stand against this. At the moment we must rely on hacks to get what we so desire for our games (like the MW2 hack). This defeats the whole bloody purposes of blocking the functionality!

Blizzard's Starcraft 2 and Bioshock 2 are also leaning in the same direction; NO LAN. This will put further strain on our future LAN's. We will need a strong internet connection to play private match servers in the future.

Is this all that different to when BF2 realeased? I seem to recall having to rent the server from a known game server provider.

I guess there still might be the option of installing the game on a LAN server but starting it from a command line which will run it in a console?

Its exactly how BF2 was done and I applaud it, stopped lots of hacks and xp cheats. Personally i think this is the way forward for all multiplayer games, don't let the kids get server files.

Im not overly concerned about online play as at least servers are dedicated and you can rent them yourself so you will have some control. I am more concerned with LAN play.

Will internet be required for LAN play, if so then a lot of games will not function at many events that simply cannot get the kind of connection needed for 12+ simultaneous gamers.

I'm sure if they were to have LAN support they would be shouting about it. It would be safer to assume that there won't be unless enough people make a fuss - and even better don't buy it without LAN support, else there will be fewer and fewer LAN games.

I have to be honest, i am happy to sign petitions and say im going to boycott a game if it doesnt have lan support or dedicated servers, but in reality im still going to get the game on release or pre order. And i suppose the games companies know this too.

But there was Lan play in BF2 so Maybe they will just rewrite the code better than IW did.

We can but hope - I would certainly like to see it, and bots of course.

Or we could all go back to playing BF2 or other proper games that support LANs.

Unfortunately, as Deviant said, we'll probably buy these games anyway.

I cannot foresee how you would play on these 'dedicated servers' without an internet connection.

The users on the official forum are also scratching there heads..

http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/367662.page

still can't believe that starcraft 2 is not going to have LAN support.

after going through these forums and some other ones, i would like to note that several people claim that the devs said specifically on twitter that there is no lan support for this game. What a bummer.

it seems lan play is not something that will be allowed for in the future, so we all better get used to playing the old games at lan. I personally think game devs are all retarded. Preventing lan play to stop piracy is stupid, mw2 didnt allow it and pirate release was available before the game was released, likewise is the same for most of these games, and i have to be honest the more the devs pull this shit the more i think screw them maybe they dont deserve my money anymore.

It's a fair point.

Are we sure you can't even fire it up and run a listen server? Surely you can?

This has been asked at the end of January (http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/376301.page) - there is no answer.

My assumption is that the client will only connect to a server, there will be no server functionality in the final product, no lan play, no private games.
I'm hoping that's not true, but Dice aren't saying that LAN play will be possible, and if it was I'm sure it would say in the specs and info about it.

Not too late to cancel orders of course.

If they are releasing dedicated servers to their trusted partners, someone WILL leak it and some clever 16 yo will hack the shite out of it for LAN

I would have thought listen servers will be allowed of course, but i think it will likely go the same way as other games and unless its hacked it still forces it to go through the internet. We can but hope that is not the case.
