View Full Version : Lanarchy CSS Custom Map Server

McBain
18-04-05, 08:26 PM
We've finally taken the plunge and have rented a CS Source server

It will run custom maps from the CoF 2005 Source map pack. The maps can be discussed and download from this thread (http://www.lanarchy.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2640). There is a http redirect from the server, so if you like, just connect and you'll download at http speeds :)

The CS Source server IP is -

82.136.20.56:27015

The server is hosted by CS-Servers.co.uk

http://www.inetgaming.co.uk/images/link1.jpg (www.CS-Servers.co.uk)

Anyone wanting to help out with the running, please contact me (http://www.lanarchy.co.uk/privmsg.php?mode=post&u=3). Of course those helping will have reduced rates/free access to any Lanarchy events and admin control of the server.

Nice work McBain.... Whos your host out of interest?

I can help (or suggest) you install "MANI Admin" plugin which is the best Admin IMHO if you like, if you havent already. ( http://www.mani-admin-plugin.com/forums/portal.php ) (Dont install the sounds, there fun, but some wont want to join to wait for them to d/l.)

Also, suggest you install HLSW (Google for it) also if you havent already.

I like custom maps, but be aware that downloading them via the gameserver takes time, and also a lot of Bandwidth if every user has to do it.... Also, I would suggest (and these are all just suggestions) that you have a mixture of custom and standard maps, otherwise, new people who join your server will soon get miffed of having to D/L each map and you might end up with a dead server. Of course, its a custom server after all, but it might be too much as a complete custom, imho.

BTW, Just checking as I type, the server appears down atm.... :S

yeah, should be back up now. I'm guessing we need to install our own restart software...

I'll do a better response to the rest when I have a bigger keyboard

Your hosts, should provide you with WEBMIN access which enables you to start and stop the server... Most do, id be supprised if they dont mate..

Turns out we have SSH access to restart the server.

I was looking at it on Saturday (when I was setting up the server for L19 which we ended up pushing through our firewall so folk could test the custom maps), I am definitely planning to install it but I'm going to try it on the server here before I attempt it one we're paying for :)

Yeah, but that would defeat the purpose of having a custom maps server :) With just having our server at home online on Sunday night we had several people trying to connect (though we had downloads disabled, so they disappeared quickly). If folk want to play standard maps there are several thousand servers already available for them to do so, plus we are providing a RAR file with all the maps in. It'd be nice if hlds let you redirect to a download site if you didn't have the map - I'm sure UT2004 does this.

This was something I was thinking about, and I can see what your saying, but also the points Wint has made are very valid. In some ways, if its custom maps, it should just run custom maps. If I was enjoying a custom map server, I would be a little annoyed if I had to keep playing through standard maps which I could do on so many other servers if I wanted.

The main thing is to get the map pack distributed and just to get people on the server. Looking at the log files, people keep joining, but then heading off when they see it is just bots on it. It will be interesting if we can get a load of us on, how many others come and join and then stay. If we can get the ball rolling, hopefully we wont need bots eventually.

I guess its a suck it and see...

I'll jump on soon :D

PS, if you do have the bots on, please set them to "difficult" and also please please please mute them. The BOT chat is very annoying at times after a few rounds....

Maybe put a hyperlink in within the MOTD for the map pack. That will help players d/l the rest once there on the server...?

We already have :)

The server went down again last night, there's obviously a map thats giving it some problems so I need to find which one ASAP and get it out of the rotation.

Unfortunatly the method they give on their website for restarting the server doesn't work for us yet, I'm guessing they didn't set us up on that yet :? So far it seems I have to be asking for all the things that are supposed to come in the package before they get done. It makes me feel a little awkward cause I'm constantly mailing them 'what about x, what about y...' :?

Anyway, I think I have the Mani plugin all ready for when it comes back up. Is there nothing linking the current files to mani other than 'exec mani_...cfg' in the server.cfg? You used to have to link the .dll or .so file in, in some way?

I've found out why it crashed, I missed the de_courthouse_final nav file  which I'm sorting now...

Ah, well I couldnt tell as it was down... :(

Glad ur sorting it and give em hell. Thats what your paying for... ;)

If the hosts are a worthy bunch (which im sure they are), they should be more than happy to help....

Not quite sure what your asking in your last comment. What are you trying to do? There are numerious txt files which do different things... within the cfg folder... No need to touch dll files unlike AMX as far as I know, well I havnt anyway ;)

Will try this server when after I get my PC up and running again.

My Promise RAID array does not like running in IDE mode in WinXP, bit of a bummer since it was fine under win2k and I have loads of stuff on those disks :-(

Look forward to seeing you on there soon Gamith :)

@ IXL - Yeah, as it turns out it's incredibly easy to install, my problem was just the dll file got uploaded as a folder :?

As for the hosts, I do feel I'm having to ask for most things, but they being incredibly helpful

If anyone with IRC notices our server has crashed, could you connect to #ukgamer on Quakenet and let them know server 217.158.150.64:45000 needs restarting :?

Thanks :)

**EDIT** I've found what crashed it today, another missing/incorrect nav file... I've checked the others and all looks good now

Btw, if anyone knows of software for windows that will automatically re-start a crashed CSS server, please let us know. Our hosts seem happy to put it on our server if it exists.

Having said that... the server is actually still up

I notice in the bottom-right of the screen there are pings rates and the like:

sum o the maps are quite interesting, too bad about the stability atm.

your hosts should provide some means of remotely restarting the server, or they should be monitoring it themselves, otherwise they do not sound like a good game server provider.

no really. it may be a shared server (doubt it), and it is too insecure to allow remote access to a server to restart it. They're a good game service provider imo, they have loads of support, which is always good. they have IRC for example, which is a lot better than many web hosts that i have seen.

I'm sure there are enough people here to notice whaen it goes down and to go on IRC and ask them to restart :D

Oh, and monitoring, they would probs charge a lot for tht.....

EDIT: oh, and theserver appears to be down now, but they are saying on IRC that it is a routing issue and it is beyond their control :(

McBain
22-04-05, 07:47 PM
Yeah, I got home and rushed to see if our server had lasted the day and was so dissappointed to see it hadn't  As you say though, it wasn't one of our maps :cheer:

Hopefully it should be stable now though (it is back up now btw) and we should really need the admins so much

I would be fairly sure the server we use has other game servers running on it, they wont make much profit if we literally have a dedicated server tbh. I can understand them not just giving me a Terminal Server log on. It would be nice, but I can understand why they can't really give it to everyone :(

Apparently they used to allow SSH access to restart servers, before they switched their server to Windows.

Yeah, but they're charging a lot more than web hosts, for a web host at

Odd, its gone down again, sometime near midnight/1am I think. I don't know if this is us, or to do with the steam update I just got logging in.

I'm a little dissapointed how long its taken them to sort out the HLStats for us though, I may be looking for a new host if they don't pull their fingure out :? IXL, who do you use?

IXL
26-04-05, 01:21 PM
For the gameserver?

I use www.inetgaming.co.uk or www.cs-servers.co.uk

Comes with IRC, TS2, Stats & Webmin (for restarts), loads of map space and unlimited bandwidth.

PM me if you want some inside info if you choose to contact them.

IXL
26-04-05, 01:24 PM
Also, they also deal with all the steam release updates as well for you....

Have not had an issue with them at all, theyve been going for just over 2 years now and also came highly recommended by my mate who runs NESW.

IXL
26-04-05, 03:59 PM
btw, is your server a branded server ?

Also is it a public or clan server?

McBain
26-04-05, 06:20 PM
Ours is an unbranded, public server that allows bots, which seemed pretty hard to find at the price I did... but its a pain not being able to restart the server ourselves. I'll take a look at the links you gave, maybe I can nick a link for the webadmin your guys use? Is your server Win based or Linux?

IXL
26-04-05, 06:54 PM
Win based...

How much are you paying in total.... please dont be shy, i want to help..

The new server is now up, the IP in the first post has been edited to - 82.136.20.21:27045

The old IP now runs Dust and Dust2 for the time remaining.

Let me know any thoughts on the new server. I don't think we get as good pings, and I'm a little dissappointed the stats only update overnight, but atleast we don't have to mess about with logs ourselves to get them.

Stats are here (http://82.136.20.14/stats/82.136.20.21/27045/index.html).

Me and Helios were thinking the-persian-boss and tha-persion-G-Unit were cheating...... when they found out an admin was on, they definately had a massive hit in their performance...... :side:

how come somebody who was playing for 11minutes, team shot/killed, and got 18 kills for 9 got a ranking of 7th? How is skill worked out?

McBain
08-05-05, 09:42 PM
I don't know. I'm sure somewhere on the PS website it explains how it is calculated. Pretty much all his stats were good though, even down to his teams win/loss ratio....

I would like to point out, of the 9 knife kills on the server, I have 6 of them ;)

helios
08-05-05, 10:05 PM
probaby a few more knife kills now, penguin was knifing it up just now.

Whats the policy on porno sparys? as there have been several people sparying them, and other peps complaining about it.

McBain
09-05-05, 05:18 AM
I guess we ask people to refrain from using them on our server. If they ignore, we take the relavent action (give a little boot ;) )

:)

McBain
13-05-05, 08:53 AM
Yeah it's stable. Stability was never really an issue though (not by the host anyway. Map stability was, but we've removed the offending ones now :) )

I'm just a little dissappointed the stats only get updated overnight :( I've played on other servers they update on map change, that was what I was really after :?

McBain

Well, tonight was the most fun I've had on the server for ages. What a bunch we had. Star of the evening was Krystal, the Texan in East Anglia... getting more drunk as the night went on. I've just come off, she's, till going after over 4 hours already  Maybe before the nights out she'll finish a map with a positive amount of kills

Anyway, top night, thanks to those there
